SCHEMATIC REVIEW

Schematic review — find circuit errors before you build

We trace connections directly in your drawings, check them against the original datasheets, and document what is wrong, why, and how to fix it — with evidence.

What we check

How we review

We read pin-to-net connections directly from the vector and text layers of your schematic PDF and zoom into blocks where needed.

Judgements about component ratings rest on the original datasheets. We quote rated voltage, current and threshold values and, where needed, show the gap from your design by calculation.

If you share firmware source, we compare its pin definitions with the schematic nets to catch pins the circuit and code interpret differently.

The report separates facts confirmed in drawings or code, datasheet references and derived calculations. Items that need bench measurement are flagged separately.

REVIEW REPORT

What the review report contains

The structure of schematic review reports we have delivered.

Summary

Board composition and the structural issues to fix first, on one page.

Finding counts

Findings grouped as must-fix (circuit, safety/security, firmware), optional improvements, needs confirmation and drawing consistency.

First-fix priorities

An ordered list of what to change (action) and what it resolves (impact).

Evidence per finding

Each finding states what was confirmed in the drawings or code and a proposed fix, adding datasheet quotes or calculations where the issue calls for them.

Against the previous revision

When a revised drawing is reviewed, earlier findings are marked resolved or still open.

Limits of verification

Items that drawings and documents alone cannot settle, including those needing physical checks, are stated explicitly.

Battery-powered motor control device — full board set and firmware

Main, UI, front and charger board schematics plus firmware source

  • No hardware path for the MCU to cut motor power — the power IC's disable pin was tied high
  • A 3.3 V sensor supply below the part's 4.5 V minimum rating
  • A pull-up resistor prevented the power-off latch from releasing reliably
  • Circuit and firmware treated the same pin differently — a 'power switch' in code, a voltage-setting node in the circuit
  • A speed calculation error made displayed values 2.5 % lower than actual
  • The firmware-update signing private key was included in the source distribution
  • Two different drawings carried the same revision number

37 findings — 15 must-fix (8 circuit, 2 safety/security, 5 firmware), 16 optional improvements, 1 needs confirmation, 5 drawing consistency. Four issues resolved since the previous revision were also confirmed.

Multi-function output device — circuit and firmware against the operating scenario

Operating scenario document, schematics for two revisions, firmware source

  • Output-voltage adjustment and sensor paths present in hardware but unused by firmware
  • A firmware defect producing no output at some output levels
  • Functions specified in the scenario but not implemented
  • Pin changes in the new revision, including the power button, so existing firmware could not be reused as-is

Organised into 5 synchronisation issues, 5 incorrectly implemented and 7 missing functions, with separate verdicts on firmware reuse, circuit integrity and production ordering.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Schematic review FAQ

Can you review the firmware too?

With firmware source, we compare pin definitions against schematic nets and read power, sensor and control code. In real reviews this found pins the circuit and code interpreted differently, plus calculation and timing defects.

We revised the drawing. Do we need another review?

Reviewing the revision shows which earlier findings are resolved and which remain. We also check for different drawings sharing the same revision number.

Do you measure physical boards?

Reviews are based on drawings, datasheets and source. Items that need bench measurement are flagged as 'needs confirmation', and measurement scope can be discussed separately.

How does schematic review differ from PCB artwork?

Schematic review checks design risks such as power architecture, component connections, MCU pin maps and interfaces. PCB artwork turns the circuit into a physical board layout and prepares manufacturing files.
